When I walked into my 40th high school reunion, I expected small talk and a few laughs about old hairstyles and bad fashion choices. It turned out to be highly emotional because I was surrounded by the people who had a front-row seat to my earliest years.
My “firsts” live in a special place inside me — my first best friend, my first heartbreak, my first taste of independence, my first sense of belonging. I shared those with people who knew me when I was still figuring it all out.
Those memories got buried under decades of life after graduation, but when I reunited with my classmates, my “firsts” came rushing back.
I reconnected with the people who knew me before
Of course, there were a few people at the reunion I was nervous to see. High school can be complicated, and not all memories are good ones. But 40 years has a way of softening the edges.
I quickly realized that the attendees knew me before life got complicated — before careers, before kids, before I started worrying about how I was “supposed” to show up in the world.
When we talked, it wasn’t just about jobs or kids or where life had taken us. As we traded stories, I realized how much of who we are now was formed back then — in hallways, under bleachers, during late-night phone calls that lasted until morning. Our “firsts” became part of our foundation.
I felt grateful for the time that has passed
At the reunion, I found myself talking to people I barely knew back then, and the conversations were deeper now. We talked about losing parents, raising kids, facing health scares, and finding new purpose.
