Canada’s New Tariffs Target US Cheese, Honey, and Hundreds of Items | Invesloan.com

The US-Canada trade war is coming for your charcuterie board (and much much more).

Without a last-minute change, Canada is set to implement a slew of new tariffs on imports from the US at 12:01am eastern on Tuesday morning. They include a 25% levy on cheese, a 50% tariff on honey, and a 50% charge on aluminum foil.

The new measures, a retaliatory response to the Trump Administration’s 50% tariffs in August on a flurry of Canadian goods like beer and milk products, could make it more expensive for Canadians to buy hundreds of US-origin items across industries like agriculture and manufacturing.

The tit-for-tat tariffs arrive after months of failed trade talks between the two countries. The conflict has left businesses and shoppers in limbo, with some Canadian stores displaying “Made in Canada” labels on products and companies like the Japanese beer-maker Sapporo moving some production from Canada to the US, Bloomberg reported.

On Monday, President Donald Trump threatened in a Truth Social post to block the Canadian airplane manufacturer Bombardier from selling in the US.

In recent weeks, tension between the US and Canada has spilled beyond just trade talks. The Trump administration issued an executive order in late August to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the US for “doing memes” and “throwing shade.”

The Canadian government said its new round of tariffs, priced at 15%, 25%, or 50% depending on the item, are meant to match the tens of billion of dollars in goods that Trump’s August tariffs impacted.

The White House has said it implemented its 50% tariffs in August in response to retaliatory tariffs Canada imposed last year on US imports like automobiles.
