Disney (NYSE:DIS) and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” this weekend bagged an estimated $155 million in ticket sales, a giant haul that may help to ease Hollywood’s worries about a lackluster summer at the box office. The animated sequel was shown in 4,440 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
The opening is the biggest so far in 2024, which hasn’t seen any movies debut at more than $100 million. It also was the second-best opening weekend for Pixar and the second-biggest opening for an animated film following the studio’s release of “Incredibles 2” in 2018.
Global sales for “Inside Out 2” were an estimated $140 million, bringing its total haul to a record $295 million. The film overtook “ Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong” as the best-selling feature so far this year.
Before this weekend, box office sales were down 26% from last year, when megahits such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” were released. Last year, “Barbie” scored $162 million in its opening weekend.
Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” was in second place with $33 million, down about 42% from its debut opening. The action comedy has netted $112 million domestically and $214 million globally.
