BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Argentine President Javier Milei stated on Thursday he’ll suggest a invoice to penalize the central financial institution from financing the nation’s treasury.
Milei, talking in an interview with native information broadcaster TN, stated he would look to cease the financial authority from printing extra payments in a bid to rein in inflation, which at present tops 200% yearly.
The libertarian president, who took workplace in December with a promise of controlling the economic system in a rustic dealing with spiraling poverty, stated the International Monetary Fund (IMF) helps his insurance policies.
“The fund is very satisfied with what we’re doing,” Milei stated following a gathering earlier within the day with Gita Gopinath, the fund’s first deputy managing director.
Gopinath stated in a press release that the Milei administration’s “initial actions are starting to bear fruit, although the path ahead remains challenging.”
The IMF acknowledged Argentina’s efforts to determine a powerful fiscal anchor. In December, Argentina devalued the native peso forex by greater than 50% towards the U.S. greenback.
“Consistent and well-communicated monetary and (foreign-exchange) policy will be necessary to continue to bring down inflation durably, rebuild reserves, and strengthen credibility,” Gopinath stated.
