Higher Education Is Becoming the Newest Playground for Billionaires | Invesloan.com

Ken Griffin’s latest bet? South Florida’s higher education.

The billionaire hedge fund manager gifted $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, with $2 billion earmarked to develop a Miami campus for the Pittsburgh-based school.

Griffin has a history of shelling out big to schools. Back in 2023, he gave Harvard University, his alma mater, the school’s largest-ever donation. While that gift was “unrestricted,” the Carnegie Mellon one has a clear intent: developing talent in his backyard.

In recent years, no one has been a bigger backer of Miami and the broader South Florida region than Griffin, who grew up there. He’s relocated the headquarters of his two companies (Citadel and Citadel Securities) there and poured money into initiatives across the city.

Still, the Wall Street South that so many predicted years ago hasn’t fully materialized, making Griffin’s investment stand out. While overall financial presence in the region has increased, actual investors haven’t flocked there.

Griffin’s gift highlights how billionaires are leveraging their wealth to reshape education.

The names on college campus buildings across the country show the wealthy have always held some level of influence in academia.

But it’s one thing to buy a new dorm building to make sure junior gets accepted. It’s another to write nine- or ten-figure checks.

The money is also coming in at a time when people are rethinking the entire education system. Rising student debt, along with changes to repayment plans, has people questioning the value of higher education.

Artificial intelligence has further ignited the debate. Majors that seemed resilient in any job market, like software engineering, are under serious threat from AI.

That’s created an opportunity for the ultrawealthy to step in. Bill Ackman, for example, has been a vocal proponent of Alpha School, which focuses on AI-based learning.

Others are taking a more hands-on approach. Andreessen Horowitz, one of the most famous VCs in the world, recently created the Horowitz Andreessen Academy for high school grads looking to break into the tech scene.

Trying to fix what many view as a broken system isn’t inherently wrong. The issue becomes what level of influence the people leading the change hope to have.

For Griffin, it appears to be less about what they learn and more about where they learn it. Mainly, somewhere that’ll feed into the financial empire he’s trying to build in the Magic City.
