JetBlue Hikes Checked Bag Fees, Citing Rising Operating Costs | Invesloan.com

If you’re flying with checked luggage, your next JetBlue trip is about to get pricier.

JetBlue told Business Insider in a statement on Monday that it implemented fee changes after “careful consideration.”

“As we experience rising operating costs, we regularly evaluate how to manage those costs while keeping base fares competitive and continuing to invest in the experience our customers value,” said a spokesperson for JetBlue.

“Adjusting fees for optional services used by select customers, such as checked baggage, allows us to continue offering more competitive fares while delivering the onboard experience our customers love,” the spokesperson added, “Including complimentary snacks and drinks, unlimited, high-speed WiFi, and seatback entertainment screens.”

According to JetBlue’s website, the price of a first checked bag for a domestic flight is now $39 for non-peak days and $49 for peak travel days, up from a base of $35 for non-peak and $40 for peak travel days.

Travelers with a co-branded JetBlue credit card and membership status who have been receiving free checked bag benefits will not be charged, according to JetBlue.

JetBlue did not explicitly cite fuel prices as the reason for increasing bag fees. The change is coming as the US and Israel’s attack on Iran continues to put a chokehold on the global supply of oil, causing the price of fuel to surge. Along with labor, fuel is one of airlines’ top expenses.

According to the Argus US Jet Fuel Index, the price of jet fuel per gallon saw a more than 80% increase between February 27 and March 30, from $2.5 to $4.62. The US and Israel’s joint mission began on February 28.

Airlines around the world have been responding to the global fuel price hike in different ways. Scandinavian Airlines will be canceling around 1,000 flights in April, and Lufthansa plans to add fuel surcharges on specific routes. United Airlines said in March that it will be reducing its capacity by approximately 5% for the second and third quarters of 2026, starting with off-peak flights. United CEO Scott Kirby has also warned that customer fares could soon increase to offset higher fuel costs.

JetBlue has a history of being the first to raise prices among US airlines. Back in August 2018, JetBlue raised the price of a first checked bag to $30 from $25, becoming the first major US airline to reach that price point. At the time, most large US carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, were all charging $25 for the first checked bag.
