Harry and Meghan moved away from the UK in March 2020 after stepping back as senior royals.

However, in episode five of “Harry & Meghan,” they shared that they had considered moving to three Commonwealth countries to continue working for the Queen outside the UK.

Harry and Meghan said they presented the royal family with a plan for them to move to New Zealand in 2018, South Africa in the spring of 2019, and, finally, Canada at the end of 2019.

“The family and their people knew that we were trying to find a different way of working for a minimum of two years,” Harry said.

Harry said the Queen’s, Charles’, and Prince William’s offices approved their plan to move to South Africa, and each office signed off on an “internal document” regarding the move.

However, Harry said the document was leaked to The Times in April 2019, so the move was canceled.

“Then that whole plan was then scrapped because it’s now become a public debate,” Harry said. “Once plans like that become public debates, nine times out of 10, it’s gonna fail.”

The plan to move to Canada was also leaked in January 2020, which frustrated Harry because he had asked his father if he could avoid putting the plan in writing. Charles said he couldn’t make the move happen without it being written down.

Harry sent his father details about the move on January 1, 2, and 3, 2020, and The Sun published a story about it by January 7. Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals the next day.
