    • Trump said in a Truth Social post that he’ll increase tariffs on Canada by another 10%.
    • Trump said the increase was in response to an anti-tariff ad made in Ontario featuring Reagan.
    • Ontario paused airing the ad after Trump ended trade talks.

President Donald Trump said he’ll increase tariffs on Canada by another 10% in response to a Canadian anti-tariff ad that features former President Ronald Reagan.

Trump announced the decision on Saturday in a Truth Social post in which he called the ad “fraudulent.” The advertisement, which featured Reagan criticizing tariffs, aired during the Major League Baseball World Series game on Friday.

“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently shared the ad on his X account. The minute-long ad included excerpts from Reagan’s 1987 “Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade.” After Trump said he would end trade talks with Canada over the ad, Ford said it would be paused after the weekend so negotiations could resume.

The Trump administration has issued several tariffs on Canada, including a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum imports. In response, Canada has levied its own tariffs against the US.

On November 5, the US Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments about the legality of Trump’s tariffs. If the court doesn’t rule in Trump’s favor, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a September filing that the president may have to refund as much as $1 trillion in tariff revenue.

Representatives for the White House did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
