During these troubling times when Americans feel more divided than ever before, it’s nice to see this nation come together from time to time.

Today is one of those days. America has united for Dale Earnhardt and the memories we have of an American who stood for everything this country used to stand for. Dale was the best of us. He was the common man. He was the man working on a car in a garage behind a mobile home. He was corporate America. He was the guy who just wanted to take his fishing boat out a few times per year to relax.

Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 at Daytona Beach, Fla., on Feb. 15, 1998, after 20 tries. The win came 50 years to the day of NASCAR’s first race. (ISC Archives/CQ-Roll Call Group via Getty Images)

That is why when the Greensboro Police Department tweeted Wednesday that “‘Raise hell, Praise Dale,’ is not an appropriate response when we ask you why you were speeding,” America was left no choice but to go on the offensive.

Like Dale bodying that punk rainbow warrior Jeff Gordon into the wall, the best people in this nation declared (virtual) war on the GPD.

Even Dale Jr. went on the offensive for his dad’s memory.

Of course NASCAR, who would love for fans to move on and root for a modern driver as hard as they rooted for Dale, got in on the action. “Leave the speeding for the race track,” NASCAR’s account tweeted. That response was instantly bashed by old-school NASCAR fans who remember why the sport was invented.

“This is not the kind of bootlegging attitude you guys started off with,” one fan responded. “NASCAR was built by guys who got good at outrunning the cops while hauling moonshine. This is ironic,” wrote another.

    Remember your roots, NASCAR.

Americans let the Greensboro PD know they’ll never, ever stop praising Dale. It’s the social construct they signed up for a long, long time ago.
