Tour de France rider crashes into the again of assist car that slammed on the brakes | Invesloan.com

The Tour de France wraps up on Sunday, but we didn’t get to the finish line without one of the weirdest freak accidents we’ve seen in a while.

Colombian cyclist Einer Rubio was cruising his way through Stage 19 on Friday, climbing Alpe d’Huez, and riding behind one of the support vehicles.

That always seemed like a good idea to me — let it punch a big ol’ hole in the air for you to ride in — but what Rubio didn’t account for was that vehicle having to suddenly slam on the brakes as the race made its way along a tight road with spectators on each side.

This, folks, is why you leave a gap to the car in front of you out on the roadways.

I know this isn’t the same thing, but it’s never a bad time to brush up on road safety.

What you can’t see in that clip is that, according to UAE Team Emirates-XRG, it was their car that Rubio crashed into, and it had to slam on the brakes because a spectator fell in front of it.

“A spectator fell forward directly into the path of the car,” a team spokesperson said, per The Telegraph. “The car braked to avoid the collision. It was a very unfortunate incident and something nobody wants to see. We wish Einer Rubio a speedy recovery.”

Rubio — who was 27th overall in the standings at the time of the incident — was pretty beaten up and needed 20 stitches. He spent an hour in the medical tent and was flown by helicopter to a hospital for further testing.

Here’s to a speedy recovery, but whenever I see this sort of thing, my first thought is always, why do they let fans get so close? It has never ended well.

It’s not like fans being that close makes you faster. It can only ever cause a wreck because someone fell in front of a support vehicle or some old lady rides her Rascal scooter into the peloton.
